Trudeau claims that in order to regain Canadians' trust, sports groups must work hard.

TORONTO - In order to rebuild confidence and reassure parents that their children are being cared for, organisations like Hockey Canada and Gymnastics Canada have work to do, according to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who is worried that sports organisations are not doing enough to keep athletes safe.

Assuring parents across the nation that their children are safe, that they are an organisation promoting the kinds of values, the kind of safe environment that every parent has a right to expect for their children, and that we want kids to model, should be their top priority, not appeasing the government, said Trudeau on Friday.

Pascale St-Onge, the minister of sport, confirmed to CTV News on Thursday that funding to Gymnastics Canada will be suspended until the group cooperates with the Office of the Sport Integrity Commissioner (OSIC).

This happened after more than 500 gymnasts signed an open letter to St-Onge requesting that the minister halt funding to the group and renewing prior requests for an investigation into what they refer to as "the pervasive culture of abuse that prevails in Canadian gymnastics." When asked to react on the letter on Thursday, Gymnastics Canada stated it would do so on Friday.

In response to criticism over how it handled allegations of sexual assault, Hockey Canada's financing was also frozen by the federal government last month.

According to Trudeau, he wants all Canadian sports organisations to be more open and commit to accountability measures like the abuse-free sport initiative run by the OSIC. The Canada Games Council, Canadian Sport for Live, Volleyball Canada, and Weightlifting Canada Haltérophilie are the only programme signatories at the moment.

Additionally, according to Trudeau, the government is dedicated to restoring confidence in athletic associations.

He declared, "We're going to keep fighting for improvements that make sure that our kids are kept secure as a government and collaborating with other orders of government."

We must pay attention and take action, and that is exactly what we are doing.
